5 Free Kid-Friendly Activities In Dallas

Nanny blog

Having fun with the kiddos in Dallas doesn’t have to be expensive! Our city is brimming with fun, educational, and free activities that kids can enjoy. From museums to city attractions to parks and more, nannies can find plenty to do with the kids in Dallas.

Play at Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Park, an urban green space in downtown Dallas, provides free activities to residents and visitors. Regular events include free family-friendly movies on the Great Lawn, music and storytime for kids, science experiments hosted by Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and much more.

Even if you can’t make it to one of these events, there’s plenty to do at Klyde Warren on any given day. The Children’s Park has a multi-dimensional playground, a fountain, and a merry-go-round to keep kids engaged. You can even play croquet, badminton, putt-putt golf, and ping pong on the lawn, too.

Visit the Dallas Museum of Art

Across the street from Klyde Warren Park is the Dallas Museum of Art, one of the largest museums in the country. DMA hosts tons of family-friendly programs for kids, tweens, and young adults of all ages. For little ones under five, check out one of Arturo’s Library totes. Each tote allows you to further explore the museum galleries with picture books and hands-on activities. Or, head to DMA the first Tuesday of the month for storytime, themed arts and crafts, and gallery fun.

General admission to see DMA’s galleries and most exhibitions is free everyday. Even when a ticket is required for special exhibitions, children aged 11 and under are always free.

Ride the McKinney Avenue Trolley

Cool your heels and take a break from the Dallas heat by hopping on the McKinney Avenue Trolley, aka the M-Line. The restored vintage streetcars (complete with heating and air-conditioning) travel up and down historic Uptown Dallas all year-round.

Get on or off the trolley at various attractions like Nasher Sculpture Garden, Dallas World Aquarium, Federal Reserve Bank, and many more. If you’re hungry, you can also stop at Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Grimaldi’s Pizza, or LARK on the Park along the M-Line route. Riding the M-Line is always free, though you can make a donation to the Trolley Farebox while riding.

Explore the Dallas Farmers Market

If you have a budding foodie on your hands, spend a weekend day strolling through the Dallas Farmers Market, an open-air pavilion in the heart of downtown. Browse through seasonal produce, naturally raised meats and cheese, fresh bread, and even wares from arts and crafts vendors.

You can even pull a wagon through the market if you plan to do some shopping. Misters and ceiling fans keep the pavilion cool on the hottest of Dallas summer days. Plus, there are plenty of free samples you can enjoy at the market.

Take a break from the city at White Rock Lake

With over 1,000 acres, White Rock Lake offers a variety of activity options to choose from. White Rock Lake is just five miles northeast of downtown Dallas, but feels a world away thanks to gorgeous natural scenery.

If the kiddos need to get some extra energy out, try biking on the 9.33 mile trail that winds around the lake. You can also rent kayaks and canoes and enjoy the scenery from the water. Need a more relaxing activity? Walk along the trail, go bird watching or fishing, or have a snack in one of White Rock Lake’s many picnic areas.
